Here is a small history of my family roots in Kenya. Furthest left is my Dad. He's seen here with his siblings and the iconic Mama Kisu, my great grandmother. . . Bebe Basant Kaur, came to Kenya following her marriage in 1916 to Puran Singh, who himself stepped ashore on the East African Coast quite by mistake when the winds set his dhow adrift, off his intended destination to somewhere else from Basra, India. He adopted his new-found land and finding employment as a tinsmith with the Kenya Railways in 1912, and the saintly Bebe Basant Kaur making herself engrossed in bhagti and seva at the local Gurudwaras. The iconic woman, who was highly respected in the Sikh community for her dedicated seva, began to be known as 'Mama Kisu' (kisu means knife in Swahili), for she wore her Kirpan unconcealed. She carried herself fearlessly, and yet everyone found a sense of security when they were in her company. Probably, a true Khalsa woman that ever walked the Kenyan soil.
