It all started for me when I heard a poignant song on Instagram reels that seemed to be trending a while back.

Kanda Kacheya Ne, a beautiful song by Jyotica Tangri and Tarnvir Singh Jagpal touched some chord and when I looked it up, I found that it was from the soundtrack of a movie. I usually watch movies as background noise and rarely pay much attention unless I’m in a cinema, but “Daana Paani” had my full attention.

“Daana Paani” is a Panjabi movie that leaves a lasting impact with its poignant storytelling and brilliant execution. Directed by Tarnvir Singh Jagpal, this film beautifully captures the essence of human relationships, sacrifice, and the consequences of choices made.

Set against the backdrop of the Partition of India, “Daana Paani” delves into the lives of Mehtaab (Simi Chahal) and Basant Singh (Jimmy Sheirgill), two individuals whose paths cross in the most unexpected way. The film takes viewers on an emotional rollercoaster as it explores the themes of love, loss, and redemption.

One of the strongest aspects of “Daana Paani” is its powerful performances. Jimmy Sheirgill delivers a stellar portrayal of Basant Singh, a man torn between duty and desire. His nuanced acting brings depth and authenticity to the character, making the audience empathize with his struggles.

Jimmy has acted in a few Bollywood movies but I find him at his best in Panjabi films. Simi Chahal, on the other hand, shines as Mehtaab, displaying a perfect blend of vulnerability and strength. Her innocence and naivety is endearing and the heartbreak she goes through had my heart gripped. Simi, in all her beauty and simplicity the role required, did an outstanding job.

The film’s cinematography beautifully captures the picturesque landscapes of Panjab, immersing the viewers in its rustic charm. The attention to detail in the production design adds depth to the narrative, effectively recreating the era of the Partition and enhancing the overall visual experience.

What sets “Daana Paani” apart is its ability to evoke genuine emotions. The screenplay, penned by Jass Grewal, strikes a perfect balance between heart-wrenching moments and subtle humor, keeping the audience engaged throughout. For me, it was the ending that got me bawling because as the story was being narrated, the pain and hardships that was being faced finally found the perfect ‘home’.

The film’s soundtrack, composed by Jaidev Kumar, further adds to the emotional depth, enhancing the storytelling. Kanda Kacheya Ne is, of course, my most favourite song from the soundtrack, but having said that, the music is lovely and the melodies are heartwarming.

Additionally, “Daana Paani” successfully tackles important social issues, shedding light on the human cost of the Partition and the long-lasting effects it had on families. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during that tumultuous period in history, leaving a lasting impact on the viewers. I didn’t stop thinking about it for days hence this review, even though I know it’s not a new movie.

Overall, “Daana Paani” is a must-watch film that showcases the brilliance of Panjabi cinema. Its engaging narrative, powerful performances, and visually stunning execution make it a standout movie. It successfully explores universal themes of love, sacrifice, and redemption, leaving the audience reflecting on the power of human connections. Whether you’re a fan of Panjabi cinema or not, “Daana Paani” is a film that will touch your heart and stay with you long after the credits roll. I got my daughter to watch this movie and she absolutely loved it.
