Iโm not hugely into going out to party until the wee hours of the morning. I feel Iโve been there, done that and Iโve got more than a closetful of t-shirts but that doesnโt mean I donโt go out at all. Last Saturday I made my way to the Carnivore to rock the night away with four fantastic international acts, one being Kenyaโs very own Gupz Saund, who does the Drive Show on East FM. Gupz has made a name for himself on an international level representing our country far and wide.ย He started off the evening by spinning the decks and unleashing his brand new single besides his other hits.
On the same stage with him was the extremely talented DJ Harvey who has been in the trade for over eight years and has worked with big huge names in the bhangra industry. He oozed humility as I chatted with him and the amazing dhol players Gupsy and Rambo. Looking like any other young lads at Carnivore to have a good time, this trio could only be identified as British from their accents.
Then I met Jaz Dhami who had me gaga in no time at all. I had specific instructions from my daughter to ask him if he will marry her and Jaz actually blushed at that. Soft-spoken and down to earth, this lad has made a mark in the bhangra industry and is one of those lads you know is here to stay. His popularity was very evident on stage when the audience was singing along with him and did not stop dancing. I grinned to myself as I watched the women push their way forward towards the stage to dance.
Then came on Shin who just said โHanjiโ which means yes, and had hypnotized the crowd thereon. He came onto stage wearing a maroon sherwani with gold embroidery and proceeded to give a performance which allowed me to feel that Shin outdoes himself each and every time he performs on stage. I still remember when I was a student in the UK, it was all the rage to skive off and go for lunch-time gigs these big bhangra bands used to have.
Anyway, the last time Shin was in Kenya was over 8 years ago and left us with a broken dance floor (yes, heโs that good) and memories of a lifetime. This time was no less. No broken dance floor was left behind but a whole load of memories were etched in minds. The performance by all the stars was epic and the party went on until the wee hours of the morning.
Like I said Iโm not one to rave about such gigs but I really enjoyed myself at this one and above all when the organization is so well done you tend to get great value for your money. Diamond Entertainment is a group of young, dynamic individuals who have made it their focus to bring to the audiences the best of entertainment locally and from abroad.
After partying all night on Saturday I had to spend the whole of Sunday to recover. Clearly I donโt have that bounce-back I had as a teenager but the mind-set of partying and enjoying myself is still clearly there. What the heck โ I had a brilliant time and actually wouldnโt mind donning my dancing shoes on again to party the night away!
