Delhiโ€™s โ€˜Rape Cultureโ€™ has me seething

stop rape

I was reading some statistics the other day and came across an article that said that in January and February this year, there have been 400 rape case that were reported in Delhi. Basically that just makes it the Rape Capital of the world and Iโ€™m sitting here thinking what a label to live with.

Itโ€™s disgusting that people think itโ€™s ok to rape. Every now and then I will read that tourists are also raped as are young girls and out of this, the 400 figure that was mentioned in the report is just the reported cases. How many of these incidences go unreported?

I donโ€™t know if itโ€™s upbringing, environment, exposure to pornography or what, but there is something that acts as a trigger for this culture. I could easily put it down to a lack of education, sexual education at the least, if nothing else. I know for a fact how taboo it is in South Asian households to talk openly about sex. Talking to your kids about it is simply not done. Iโ€™m not sure why though.

Iโ€™m going to be very crude as I put this forward but watching movies and accessing magazines and books with the slightest hint of anything sexual gets these goats all horny and then they need to vent their sexual frustrations. Catcalling, eve-teasing and just touching virtual strangers in hordes of human traffic isnโ€™t an uncommon practice. You could be minding your business on a crowded bus or just walking through the streets and some men will think of nothing at groping or fondling women and walking off.

We all want to know why no one has the guts to stop them. Iโ€™ve watched Indian television ads that encourage the public to speak up and stand by people who ask for help. The โ€˜Itโ€™s not my businessโ€™ syndrome exists almost everywhere in the world where people do not want to get involved with anyoneโ€™s woes, and especially not when a bunch of hoodlums are picking on a woman. Violence usually ensues and people feel itโ€™s best to keep away.

It is such a shame that the world has come to this where we have ceased to make such things our business. Unless of course it happens to someone we know and someone we love, we donโ€™t really act on this. Rape isnโ€™t just confined to Delhi. It happens everywhere and I was talking to someone from the UK who told me that half the time rape cases donโ€™t get to courts because the charges are dropped because people donโ€™t have the guts to come forward and complain or take it up completely. It is fear that stops them.

I donโ€™t really know what else to say except that we shouldnโ€™t act like itโ€™s not our business. Allowing rape to become the norm and not fight it or prosecute the rapists is not what we want to unleash because then our future, our kidsโ€™ future is completely doomed. Speak up about anything you donโ€™t feel is right. You may be just the one voice but at least seeing you others will also garner the guts to stand up against atrocities being meted out against human beings by human beings.

  1. i always step in if i see someone doing something bad, my husband gets irritated sometimes and says it is none of my business, but thats when i say well im making it my business. im also pleased to say my 4 sons take after me as far as that gos. my 10 year old son was almost kicked off the school bus last week, the bus driver called him a trouble maker for defending a little girl who was being touched inappropriatly by older kids. i told my son how very proud i was of him and reported the idiotic bus driver.

    1. I’m so happy to know that you empower with action and great examples. It’s up to us to teach our kids to keep this chain reaction going. I feel good to know that you are doing your bit for this world. Kudos to you! x

  4. For those of you who are of Adam’s generation and have a natally
Libran Saturn, the hardships and trials you will be
tested with over the next few years will also be the
indicators that you now think like adults and that you have been bestowed with a gifted sense of
judgement along with high minded principles that always
consider what is best for the good of all. If the
Penis holds low or moderate interest to him and he has good manners, I will date him.

This has a drastic affect on their lives and they face many issues in society that can devastate their life.
