Remembering Aleem Manji: A Remarkable Journey of Friendship and Loss

Joining East FM and becoming a co-host alongside Aleem Manji marked the beginning of a memorable chapter in my life. Our initial encounter was an informal and hilarious interview that unexpectedly led to a deeper connection. Little did I know that Aleem would become more than just a colleague; he would become a cherished friend and a pillar of support during a challenging time in my life. However, amidst the celebration of Diwali, I find myself mourning the loss of a brother, feeling the immense pain, shock, and devastation caused by his untimely departure.

Aleem and Kamal

As we delved into a conversation about Liverpool Football Club during my call-in at East FM one fine morning, Aleem and I discovered a shared passion for the sport. This unexpected connection sparked a deeper conversation, revealing that our parents were friends and our siblings had a close relationship. It was even more surprising to realize that my childhood friend was Aleem’s first cousin. This newfound connection laid the foundation for a remarkable friendship that extended beyond the radio station.

Aleem’s young age didn’t hinder his wisdom and ability to offer great advice. As I embarked on my co-hosting journey, he mentored and trained me, allowing me to dive into the role with both feet. His guidance and encouragement were invaluable during a period of personal turmoil, as I had recently separated from my ex-husband. The timing of the job offer couldn’t have been more perfect, providing a much-needed distraction and a fresh start.

Over time, Aleem became more than just a mentor or colleague; he became family. Our bond grew stronger, and his presence was a constant source of support. My children adored him from the moment they met him, recognizing the genuine care and kindness he radiated. Aleem’s own family life flourished as he married a wonderful woman and together they shared the joys of parenthood. Our friendship transcended the boundaries of the workplace, and we often joked about blood being thicker than water, emphasizing our deep connection.

Recently, Aleem and I shared a heartfelt conversation during a visit to his home. We bared our souls, discussing our lives without holding back, and even shed a few tears together. It was during this visit that he surprised me with samosas for tea, a small gesture that reflected his thoughtfulness and caring nature. He remembered my love for Ismaili samosas and very proudly told me his wife had made them. What was planned as a brief visit stretched into five hours, and we reluctantly parted ways, eagerly anticipating our next meeting.

Our last encounter was a barbecue at Aleem’s home, organized to bid farewell to another old colleague leaving the country. We spent a wonderful evening, cherishing the moments, and promising to stay connected more often. Little did we know that this gathering would be our final memory together.

As I reflect on our friendship, it becomes painfully evident that life can be unjust, robbing us of beautiful relationships and cherished moments. The news of Aleem’s passing fills me with profound sadness and leaves me questioning the unfairness of it all. My heart aches for his wife and children, who have become an extension of my own family. The void left by his absence is immeasurable, and the pain of this loss is overwhelming.

Aleem Manji was not just a colleague; he was a dear friend, a mentor, and a brother. His unwavering support, infectious laughter, and genuine care enriched my life in countless ways. As I navigate the depths of grief, I hold onto the cherished memories we shared, the laughter we enjoyed, and the promises we made. Although life has cheated me out of the chance to celebrate so many moments on this journey with him, the impact he made on my life will forever remain. Rest in peace, my dear brother.
